Historical Museums in the Aarhus Region

The frigate Jylland is a historic naval vessel from 1860 – built for war, used as a royal yacht, and preserved as a museum. Today, it lies moored in Ebeltoft, where visitors can explore the ship’s many decks and experience life at sea, traditional craftsmanship, and maritime technology from a defining period in Danish history – the Schleswig Wars.

At Gammel Estrup Danmarks Herregårdsmuseum, the Manor Museum, you step directly into history. Here you can experience how counts and countesses lived everyday life and celebrations in the manor's grandly decorated halls and parlours.

Museum Silkeborg's main department, Hovedgården, is located in Silkeborg's oldest building, Silkeborg Hovedgård, from 1767. Here you can meet the museum's most important people, the Tollund Man and the Elling Woman, and experience many other exciting exhibitions throughout the year, all of which provide many hours of educational and fun experiences for the whole family.

The Viking Museum is a window to the Viking town of Aros. Some 1200 years ago the Vikings founded Aarhus – at the very same spot and level where The Viking Museum is situated in the basement underneath the Nordea Bank in the 'Skt. Clemens Torv' Square.

The Paper Museum in Silkeborg is a living museum and a production centre for handmade paper. The museum is located in the old production facilities for handmade paper in the old Silkeborg Paper Factory, where, among other things, the paper for the Danish banknotes was produced.

In several places in East Jutland you can explore Museum Østjyland's exciting stories from past to present. In Randers, the museum invites you on a captivating cultural and historical journey through time - from ancient mysteries to modern life.

Det Gamle Rådhus in Ebeltoft is known and loved by many people – perhaps in particular by the more than 500 couples who get married at Det Gamle Rådhus every year. However, the town hall serves a purpose beyond being the nostalgic setting for wedding ceremonies.

Blicheregnens Museum is located close to Silkeborg in the village of Thorning, where the Danish priest and poet Steen Steensen Blicher was pastor from 1819 to 1825. Here he wrote his first short story. Today, Blicheregnens Museum is part of Museum Silkeborg and home to the story of the great medieval battle on Grathe Hede.

Viborg Museum is developing a new attraction in the heart of the Cathedral Quarter, and when Museum Wibergis opens, they invite you inside for a sensory experience about king, church and law.

The Occupation Museum illustrates dramatic events as well as everyday life in Aarhus during the German occupation 1940 - 1945.

The Museum Østjylland in Grenaa is temporarily closed, but will reopen its doors to visitors on 24 June 2026.

The museum "Gudenådalens Museum" (Gudenå river valley museum) is situated in town Bjerringbro, about 25 km south from Viborg. It is the region's historical museum with a permanent exhibition on farming, handicrafts and the Viking Age, including the Mammen axe and rune stone park.

At Stenvad Mosebrug, you’ll literally dig into the peat and dive into the past, as the bog opens up a world of stories and experiences. Here, you can step back in time to experience the hard work, large families, and cold winters of life in the old bog worker’s house.

The Craft Museum will be closed from 1 April 2025 and two years ahead. Exhibitions will be renovated and renewed. The museum will reopen in summer 2027 as HÅNDVÆRK.
