Nature and city in perfect harmony

Aarhus is a city where nature is never far away. Here, forest, beach and city life come together in a unique combination that makes it easy to be active in the open air. Whether you prefer to explore the area by bike, on foot or by the water, Aarhus offers nature experiences for every taste.

By bike – experience the city and the countryside at your own pace

Aarhus is a bike-friendly city with good path systems and short distances between attractions. You can cycle through the charming streets of the Latin Quarter, along the waterfront or out into the green areas around the city.

Cycling around the city

A popular route goes from Aarhus Ø and along the coast towards Den Permanente and on to Riis Skov – one of Denmark's oldest forests. Here you can combine the tranquillity of the forest with the view of Aarhus Bay.

If you want to go a little further, the cycle routes also lead to Marselisborgskovene south of the city, where hilly terrain and winding paths provide both a workout and panoramic views. For the more adventurous, the trip can take you out into the open countryside around Brabrandstien, which offers a beautiful tour around Brabrand Lake.

Hiking – forest, lake and coast

Aarhus is a true paradise for hikers. Marselisborgskovene offers kilometres of trails through beech forests, along coastal cliffs and past historical sights such as Den Uendelige Bro (The Infinite Bridge) and Marselisborg Castle.

To the west, you will find Brabrand Lake and Årslev Engsø, where flat paths and open spaces create the ideal setting for a peaceful walk with views of rich bird life. Here you can walk all the way around the lake or simply enjoy a shorter walk in the peaceful countryside.

Riis Skov north of the city is also ideal for a walk – here you can enjoy both the tranquillity of the forest and viewpoints overlooking the bay.

By the water – beach life and maritime experiences

The water is a central part of Aarhus' identity. The city's harbour area has been transformed into a lively urban space with a promenade, harbour bath and kayaking opportunities. Here you can swim all year round, go paddleboarding or simply enjoy the sun on the quay.
