Fjords and glacial valleys
The Gudenå River flows into Randers Fjord near the market town of Randers. Here, nature unfolds into a tranquil and varied fjord landscape, shaped by the forces of the Ice Age, where water and land meet in gentle transitions. Randers Fjord winds its way through the East Jutland countryside and offers a rich birdlife, quiet waterways and open expanses that invite you to go hiking, cycling and kayaking. Here you can experience nature at a more leisurely pace – from green meadows and reeds along the fjord to wooded areas and paths close to the town, where nature is always just a stone’s throw away.
Coast and National Park
Randers Fjord shares a coastline with Djursland and flows out into the sea in northern Djursland. Here you can enjoy the open expanses along the more than 250 km long east-facing coast. Take a walk along the water’s edge, feel the power of the sea but also the gentle lapping of the waves, typical of the waters around the east coast. Set off on an adventure in a kayak or on a paddleboard and find your own beach or a hidden cove, where you can experience how the light over the Kattegat changes as the day progresses.
Venture further into the countryside, where the hills rise in the unique Ice Age landscape of Mols Bjerge National Park. On walks through the hills, you may encounter wild horses and grazing cattle on the warm, sunny pastures, where hiking trails with magnificent views, cycle rides through the undulating terrain and close-up nature experiences await – from rare plants to wildlife and historical traces in the landscape.
A desert in the middle of the Kattegat
From Grenaa on Djursland, you can now take a direct ferry to the region’s truly unique gem – the paradise island of Anholt. Anholt lies in the middle of the Kattegat, halfway between Denmark and Sweden, and is Denmark’s most isolated island community.
