The forests and beaches are always unique playgrounds for dogs and their beloved owners! Whether it's a trip along the stunning beaches with gentle waves lapping at the shore on Denmark's east coast or the crystal-clear forest lakes inland, the Aarhus region offers countless dog-friendly experiences and activities. Here you will find everything from playful beach walks to cosy picnics in the woods and much more.

And there's nothing like a day at the beach with fun for both dogs and humans. From October to March, you can romp along the coast, where your dog can run freely and splash in the refreshing water. Bring a ball and play fetch, or watch your dog dig into the soft sand – it's pure bliss!

Bring your bike with you on holiday or rent one when you arrive. Plan a picnic trip to the forest or beach, where you pack a picnic basket including some tasty treats for the dog. On such a trip, you will also see that the dog enjoys an extra walk while you pedal. When you reach your destination, your best friend can explore the area or perhaps take a well-deserved nap in the shade.

The dog forest – a free space for you and your dog

A dog forest is a fenced-in area where your dog can run freely and safely without a leash. Here, your dog can explore, play and meet other dogs while you enjoy nature and each other's company. The dog forest is a perfect sanctuary for both two-legged and four-legged friends, where play, exercise and socialising go hand in hand.

Restaurants and cafés – dogs are welcome here

It can be difficult to find a suitable place to eat or enjoy a cup of coffee where you can freely bring your dog inside. Here you can see which restaurants and cafés allow dogs.

Attractions - your dog is welcome here

The Aarhus Region is home to some truly unique and exceptional natural areas - but attractions also welcome pets. Visit Djurs Sommerland and Fregatten Jylland, which also welcome dogs (just remember the leash!).

In many places, your dog can enjoy the freedom to run and explore the fantastic landscapes. However, please note that there are also places where dogs must be kept on a leash, or where other animals roam freely and dogs are not allowed. Therefore, please pay attention to the signs around the areas.

Find a place to stay with your dog

Bring your pet with you when you stay at a hotel, campsite, hostel or holiday home, or when you go on a pub crawl or similar. Click below to find the accommodation that suits you and your pet's needs for a great holiday.

You can also bring your dog or other pets with you on holiday and enjoy your stay at a dog-friendly holiday centre, stay at an Inn with your dog, rent a holiday apartment  where pets are welcome, or stay with private hosts who offer accommodation with dogs.

All in all, whether you prefer a relaxing holiday in the countryside, an active holiday by the coast or a cosy city break, there are plenty of opportunities to find dog-friendly accommodation and activities where the whole family – including the dog – can join in.

Practical tips

  • Best time for beach trips: October to March.
  • Keep your dog on a leash at attractions and public areas.
  • Always bring water and a bowl for your dog when you go on outings

During the summer months from 1 April to 30 September, your dog must always be kept on a leash, even on the beach. During the winter season from 1 October to 31 March, your dog can run freely without a leash in most places, but you must always keep it under control so that it does not pose a danger to other people or animals. There may be special rules, so always keep an eye on the signs.
