Discover Søndermarkskirken in Viborg

Søndermarkskirken in Viborg is a modern circular church dating from 1981, designed by the architect Svend Frandsen. Its distinctive circular shape creates a unique church interior, where the congregation and church services take centre stage.

Church art and fascinating details

Step inside and discover the church’s unique décor. The baptismal font is a genuine mussel shell, symbolising pilgrimages and bearing a historical connection to the Hærvejen.

Also take note of the altar wall, where the sculptor Yan has created a decoration featuring ships, coloured glass and sunbeams in stainless steel. The light highlights the artwork’s many details.

The Hærvejen Tapestry - a story told in embroidery

One of the church’s most distinctive works of art is the ten-metre-long Hærvejen Tapestry, which tells the story of the Hærvejen through embroidered motifs.

The tapestry was created based on watercolours by the artist Inga Linde Jensen and embroidered by a group of women over a period of five years. You will find it in the passageway leading to the church nave.

The church also provides a setting for concerts and musical events.
