The festival makes the city vibrant with life, energy and creativity. Urban art, gastronomy and music. For 10 days every street and alley, club, stage, gallery and museum swarm with art and entertainment where renowned traditions flourish side by side with the new and unexpected. 

Highlights 2019

The band TV·2 opens the Festival
They sarcastically call themself The Most Boring Band in Denmark but the audience are in for a concert that is everything but boring when TV·2 takes the stage and opens this year's Aarhus Festival. 

The Open Heart
‘The Open Heart’ is a 12 hour interactive experience (from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m.) exploring the balance of power and the borderline between goodness and self-righteousness.

Voices Build Bridges
Celebrate the sense of community and joy that occurs when singing together. Voices Build Bridges includes workshops, concerts with different choirs and vocal ensembles and other performances that all point to the same conclusion: Singing together is good for you. 

Bell Orchestra + Aarhus Symphony Orchestra 
Canadian ensemble Bell Orchestra performs music from their forth-coming album "House Music", their first in 10 years, alongside Aarhus Symphony Orchestra in a concert that celebrates experimental indie as well as classical music. 

Groovy Grammy nominated jazz
Ujazz is a returning one-day festival during The Aarhus Festival where you can experience top international jazz artists with great originality. The artists will mainly feature new or improvised work where they are testing the limits and experimenting.

Aarhus Streetart Festival
At the Aarhus Street Art Festival you could enjoy the sight of brilliant colors, thoughtful themes and marvelous motives when some of the world's best street art artists transformed the City Park into a giant street art gallery during the Aarhus Festival.

Understrøm - Undercurrent
Undercurrent is a free three-day music festival, located along Aarhus Å at Mølleparken, Immervad and under Sankt Clemens Bro. The programme is wide with different environments and genres.

The Theme

The theme for Aarhus Festival 2019 is "Bridging". This means that the festival aimed at building bridges across arts forms and established new connections between nature and city life, genres and novel experiences.

Each year, the festival has a theme serving as a frame for the more than 1000 different events and 100 venues. The events vary widely and cover all aspects of art and culture and gathers around a half million guests each year. The festival encompasses theatre, music, art and architecture in urban spaces, gastronomy, dance and everything in between to create a setting of curiosity, culture and creativity.

Royal affiliation and rich history

The patron of Aarhus Festival is HM Queen Margrethe II and the Mayor of Aarhus is Chairman of the Festival Board. Aarhus Festival was first held in September 1965 and has developed into both an international festival and a major local cultural event.
