Information about rules for motorhomes in Denmark

Memo from the Danish Agency for Planning and Rural Affairs "Plan- og Landdistriktsstyrelsen".

For those of you who drive a motorhome, here is a brief description of the main rules for camping and parking. Always pay attention to local signage etc.

Unless otherwise stated on signs or regulations, a motorhome is subject to the same rules that apply to motor vehicles in that location.

Campsites

You are allowed to camp, including, for example, setting up table and bench sets etc. and staying overnight at a campsite in the same way as other camping guests at the campsite.

Marinas and marinas

You are allowed to camp, including, for example, setting up tables, benches etc. and staying overnight if it is a campsite. The fact that it is a campsite on or adjacent to the marina will be clearly indicated by signs or other markings on the site.

As a motorhome, you can park in areas at a marina as in other car parks if there are no signs prohibiting parking. The rules for parking are described in the section below on ‘Roads and parking areas in cities and urban areas’.

Roads and parking areas in cities and urban areas

In cities and urban areas, you can drive and park your motorhome on all roads as long as you comply with the general rules for driving and parking motor vehicles in accordance with the Road Traffic Act. It is also permitted to rest in the sleeping cabin of your motorhome.

However, if there are separate rules for driving and parking in a specific location, you must comply with them. The rules can be either through a local parking ordinance29 (drawn up by the road authority with the consent of the police), which you must be familiar with, or through signage on site.

Signage can be directed at, for example, the time you are allowed to park or the type of vehicle. For example, if it is stated that parking is not permitted between 23:00 and 7:00, this must be respected.

When parking a motorhome or other motor vehicles, it is not permitted to set up tables and benches, barbecues, awnings, etc. without having applied for permission from the road authority.

Green areas, such as beaches, forests and parks and in other natural areas

Driving and parking of motor vehicles on private public roads in the countryside and purely private roads is permitted, unless prohibited.

Motorhomes, like other motor vehicles, are generally not allowed to drive or park on beaches, in forests and parks, at nature centres etc. and in nature areas, unless motor vehicles are permitted.

In connection with the parking of a motorhome or other motor vehicles, it is not permitted to set up table and bench sets, barbecues, awnings, awnings that allow for overnight stays, etc. without permission, either through signage or other form of authorisation from the landowner.
