Modern church architecture at Thorsø

Virklund Church is situated in the centre of Virklund near Silkeborg, on a hillside north of Thorsø. The church was built in 1994 and was designed by the Danish architects Johannes and Inger Exner, who are known for their work in modern church architecture.

The building is characterised by large windows facing south and east, as well as a striking, sloping hexagonal roof, which is particularly visible from the west. The church is designed as a bright and open space where architecture, nature and church life interplay.

The Church of Light

Virklund Church is known as the Church of Light. This is due both to its architecture and the church’s central narrative, in which light plays a distinct role within the church interior. Upon entering, you are met by large windows that open the space towards the sky, Thorsø and the town of Virklund.

The view makes the church a place between heaven and earth. Here you can experience a church interior where light, the landscape and simple materials create a sense of calm and presence.
