A church with roots in the Middle Ages

Viby Church is thought to have been built around 1150 and is attributed to Valdemar the Great. The church was originally built with a Romanesque apse, chancel and nave, whilst the porch and tower were added in the 15th century.

Historical furnishings and decoration

Inside the church, you can admire several historical details. The Romanesque baptismal font is the church’s oldest piece of furniture, whilst the altarpiece from 1640 and the pulpit from the 17th century reflect the decoration of later periods. Also worth seeing are the church vessel ‘Østkar’ and the frescoes in the chancel.

The church and the green churchyard

Viby Church underwent extensive renovation in 2018–2019. Behind the church’s stone wall lies the green churchyard, featuring older graves, narrow paths, large trees and newer areas designed to promote nature and biodiversity.
