A medieval church with a long history

Sdr. Årslev Church is situated on a hilltop to the west of Aarhus. The church’s history probably dates back to the late 12th century, when the first stone church was built on the site of a former wooden church.

In the late Middle Ages, the church was extended and the timber ceiling was replaced by a cross vault. On the north side of the church, you can still see traces of the original stone church, including the bricked-up north door.

Crested gables and historical details

During a renovation in 1870, Sdr. Årslev Church acquired its characteristic crested gables and tall blind windows. The present church tower was built in 1883.

Inside, you will find a Romanesque granite baptismal font, which probably dates from the first stone church. The pulpit and the ornate Renaissance front of the altar table date from around 1600.

Behind the altar stands a statue of Christ created by Valdemar Foersom Hegndal. The statue was donated to the church in 1994 and was placed in its current position in 2002.
