Moesgaard Manor House

In the 18th century, the building was converted into a manor house in Neoclassical style. It was completed in 1778 and has since housed historical collections, including Jutland’s largest book collection. The manor house has also been associated with major landowners; for example, the Gyldenkrone family owned it for 150 years. You can see the rest of the list of owners here.

Surrounding the manor house are the former farm buildings, which together form a beautiful, symmetrical ensemble around the large courtyard.

From manor house to knowledge and research

The buildings were later converted into a museum, and today the main building belongs to Aarhus University and is used for archaeology and anthropology. The area around Moesgaard is ideal for a walk, where you can experience the interplay between the manor house, the museum, the forest and the coastal landscape. You’ll get a sense of how historic buildings and modern museum architecture sit side by side in one of Aarhus’s most distinctive cultural and natural areas.

A little way into the forest, you can also visit the idyllic restaurant, Skovmøllen.

• You cannot enter the building, but you can admire it from the outside.
