Light over Aarhus – Aarhus Festival
During Aarhus Festival, experience two spectacular light installations: VÆKST at “De Fem Søstre” by the harbour and City Gazing Aarhus at Bispetorv – both inviting reflection on the city’s history and development through light and sound.
A journey through light, sound, and city history
Aarhus Festival invites you to discover two captivating light artworks, each beautifully linking past and future through sensory art in the urban space.
VÆKST – light art at the harbour
By the harbour at the silo building De Fem Søstre, VÆKST unfolds – a sensory audiovisual installation by artists Elisabeth Holager Lund and Christoffer Møller. Here, a projection of a living wheat field merges with shifting lights and soundscapes, bringing the building’s history to life. The work is a symbolic reminder of Aarhus’ transformation from agricultural hub to modern harbour city, set in an area still in constant change. The installation can be experienced each evening after dark from 8:00 PM to 3:00 AM, throughout the festival.
City Gazing Aarhus – the city as a starry sky
At the same time, look up to City Gazing Aarhus at Bispetorv. Marking the Festival’s 60th anniversary, the acclaimed Dutch light studio VOUW – in collaboration with The Old Town Museum – brings Aarhus’ development to life with thousands of illuminated points and a specially composed soundtrack. Suspended above the square like a constellation, the installation illustrates the city’s transformation over 100 years. Every evening from 5:00 PM to 3:00 AM, visitors are invited to pause, look up, and be inspired by the city’s story in light.
Interweaving time and change
Together, these two works create a poetic dialogue between earth and sky, between the city’s agricultural roots and its structural growth towards the future. VÆKST grounds you in the past, while City Gazing Aarhus lifts your gaze towards the possibilities ahead.
