On 4 January 1944, the controversial poet and priest Kaj Munk was murdered on Hørbylunde Hill as part of the German counter-terrorism campaign against the Danish resistance movement.
The spot where his body was found was initially marked with a primitive wooden cross. After the occupation, it was replaced with a granite cross.
