Friland is an experimental community on Djursland, where residents focus on, amongst other things, becoming debt-free, self-employment, alternative building methods and reducing energy and resource consumption. You can take a walk through the area and explore the various houses and gardens.

Building with natural and recycled materials

At Friland, residents experiment with various building materials and methods. These include straw bales plastered with clay and houses insulated with wood fibre, sheep’s wool, flax and hemp. Some foundations are made using materials such as mussel shells.

Debt-free living

Debt-free living is one of Friland’s principles. Residents cannot take out loans secured against the land or the houses, and price caps have been set for the houses to prevent speculation on rising property values.

Businesses at Friland

It is Friland’s aim that at least one person in every household runs their own business or has a home-based workplace. Part of the area is also zoned for business use.

Waste and wastewater

Friland aims to minimise the amount of waste from both construction and daily life. Recyclable waste is sorted and sent for recycling.

Residents are responsible for treating their own wastewater in individual or communal systems, using methods such as plant evaporation and biological treatment.
