A sensory experience

When you visit Blindes Arbejde in Aarhus, you can often meet one of the blind or visually impaired craftspeople and gain an insight into traditional craftsmanship. You also have the opportunity to take a look inside the workshop, where the craftspeople work on brush-making, broom-making and chair caning, amongst other things.

Here, the hands are an essential tool, and the sense of touch plays a central role in working with materials, shapes and details.

Crafts for the home

In the shop, you’ll find handmade products for the kitchen, bathroom, hallway and children’s room, amongst other places. The range includes brushes, brooms, textiles and other everyday items, where function and simple design go hand in hand.

The materials vary from product to product. Among the products are, for example, dishwashing brushes with handles made from PEFC-certified beech wood and tea towels woven from yarn made from GOTS-certified cotton.

Craftsmanship with a history

Blindes Arbejde was founded in 1929 and is today a commercial foundation and a registered social enterprise. A key objective is to create jobs for people who are blind or severely visually impaired.

Chair re-weaving and repairs

Blindes Arbejde also offers re-weaving of chair seats on a range of different chairs. The work involves, amongst other things, paper yarn and various weaving techniques, and the workshop in Aarhus accepts chairs for re-weaving and selected repairs.
