Twins Marie-Louise and Anne-Cathrine are crazy about Christmas. So much so that they have created their very own Christmas blog with Christmas music play lists, tips for favourite movies, recipes and much, much more.

The girls know what it takes to put together a great Christmas. And it certainly has to include a visit to one or two Christmas markets, and this is their guide to some of the best Christmas markets around Aarhus – and they know what they are talking about.

Where will we find the best traditional Christmas market?

The Christmas market in Den Gamle By – The Old Town Museum is not a traditional market in the sense that it has stalls as far as your eye can see. Instead, elements of the classic market are spread across the entire museum. That is what makes it so lovely, as we have to go searching for the best finds.

Our favourite spots are the elves’ attic and the Christmas shop on the big square by the tall Christmas tree. Here, you can buy the most beautiful glass ornaments, elves, and Christmas decorations, not to mention a replica of Denmark’s very first Advent calendar. This is the perfect place for shopping little Christmas presents or hostess gifts.

However, Santa Claus is not the only one coming to town around Christmas, so we recommend that you do not bring your entire family all at once.

Der er ofte – som sangen går – trængsel og alarm i de små gader, og derfor anbefaler vi, at man ikke tager hele den pukkelryggede med på én gang.

Where can we find a lovely, local Christmas market?

The cobbled street, Møllestien, is absolutely beautiful all year round. But just wait till you see its transformation into a charming, little Christmas market, decorated with lights and spruce!

The group planning this market is the residents on the street and as an amazing twist, all profits are donated to charity. Møllestien’s Christmas market has more than 40 stalls with the most incredible Christmas decorations and handicraft products, and here, you will have no trouble finding the little gifts you need for the many gatherings during Christmas time.

Where will we find the most Christmassy Christmas market?

You will find it at Topkær Julestue. It is not exactly in the heart of the city, and it even categorises somewhere between a Christmas market and a Christmas tree plantation. But what makes Topkær so special is the incredibly cosy Christmas bazaar with its Christmas lights, star-shaped lamps, candy, Santas, elves, and Christmas bulbs.

When you have paid a visit to the Christmas bazaar, we highly recommend that you go for a walk in the lovely plantation, pick out this year’s Christmas tree, and end your day in the barn with a cup of hot chocolate and a plate of pancake puffs.
Christmas does bring out the child in all of us, but we highly recommend that families with children pay a visit to Topkær, as the fun and enjoyable activities there are endless.

Starter's tips

Things to eat and drink that you have to try when you visit the Christmas markets presented in the guide:

  1. The gigantic honey biscuit heart that you can get at the baker’s in Den Gamle By – The Old Town Museum. We suggest that you share it, as it is enormous. As in ‘the size of a head’-enormous.
  2. The wonderful grilled bangers you can get at the Møllestien Christmas market. Not only do they taste fantastic, they will help you keep your hands warm, too!
  3. The hot chocolate with little marshmallows from Peter Larsen Kaffe, that you can get at one of the little stalls at Tivoli Friheden. Is has just the perfect temperature and is ready to drink when you get it.
  4. A round of churros at Tivoli Friheden. However, when it comes to deciding the right toppings, we are torn; Marie-Louise does not doubt for a second that it has to be cinnamon sugar and chocolate, while Anne-Cathrine insists on having soft ice cream. So, do not go for churros as a snack you would like to share!
  5. The delicious hot chocolate you get at Topkær. Here, you buy a chocolate ball filled with cocoa powder that after a while will dissolve into the hot milk. Absolutely perfect.
