Tved Church
Tved Church on Djursland is beautifully located on a hillside overlooking Knebel Vig, approx. ½ km. north of the village of Tved. It is believed that the church is the oldest church on Mols, built in the first half of the 12th century. The church is also the largest church on Mols, with approximately 200 permanent seats.
The building is whitewashed, and both the nave and the chancel are covered with lead. Tved Church is ‘kullet’, meaning that it has no tower, which is unusual in Mols. Where one would expect to find the tower, i.e. to the west, there is a large chapel with a tiled roof. This chapel is possibly the lower part of a former tower.
In 1940-42, the church underwent a thorough restoration, and while laying a new floor, an old crypt was discovered that had been used for burials of the old noble families from Kvelstrup and Isgård.
According to legend, the church was supposed to be located between Tved and Dejret, but a troll tore it down every night, so it was decided to find a new building site: two heifers were tied together, and the church was to be built where they were found grazing the next morning.
And the vicarage land is also known to be the best land in the parish.
