Red Fall - City gate in Randers
Red Fall, one of Randers' city gates, is a sensory work of art at the harbour in Randers. The striking city gate at Østervold is both a sculpture and a water feature, inviting you to stop and experience the sound, light and movement of the red falling water.
A work of art by the harbour
Red Fall stands as a striking artistic feature close to Randers' harbour front. The sculpture was created by the renowned artist Ingvar Cronhammer in 2002 and, at approximately 12 metres high, is an eye-catching encounter between art, urban space and elements such as water and light.
The work appeals to several of your senses. When the water runs down the facade, it creates a lively reflection of light, a feeling of moisture in the air and a faint rhythm from the movement of the water - something that makes the experience intense, especially when you stand close by.
History and significance
Red Fall is not a traditional city gate like those that once enclosed the city's fortifications. Instead, it is a modern work of art that symbolically points back to the city's historic gates while creating a new visual identity for the harbour area. The sculpture was donated by several foundations and is now a publicly accessible work of art in the city.
