The Rail Trail from Viborg to Hammershøj

Riding your bike along the railway trail between Viborg and Hammershøj will bring you spectacular views of Nørreådalen valley and Viborg, home to the magnificent cathedral dating back to 1140. The railway was closed down in 1965.

Among the many highlights is the working factory museum Bruunshaab Gl. Papfabrik, where you can experience how cardboard was made in the old days and see the machines in action.

Discover the history of watermills

You'll cycle along the old railway embankment through wetlands and out through the wide river valley, Nørreådalen. Along the way you'll pass through the villages of Vejrumbro, Tabdrup and Ørum, and there are several rest stops along the trail for breaks.

Along the way, you'll pass several small mills that have used water power to grind grain, spices and flour over the years. These small technological marvels tell the story of a time when hydropower was an essential resource for agriculture and production in the area.

The railway was closed in 1965.

Practical tips for the tour

To get the most out of your bike ride, it is recommended to bring a packed lunch and enjoy it in the scenic surroundings along the route. Make sure your bike is well maintained, as the route offers both flat stretches and small hills.

At Anbjerg you'll find great facilities such as a campfire hut, shelter, fire pit, packed lunch house, nature playground and MTB trails.
