Lushage on Helgenæs
Explore Lushage on Helgenæs, where flower-covered hills meet the coast. Here you can experience dramatic clay cliffs, small ‘washboard waves’ in the landscape and nature conservation with grazing forest cattle.
Open hills with views
At Lushage on Helgenæs, you can enjoy a walk in an open, hilly landscape where the hills alternate between colourful fields of flowers and robust scrub. You can choose to walk towards the views over the bay or follow the terrain towards the coast and feel how the landscape constantly changes character.
Cliffs and clay that shape the coast
The area's unique appearance is due to layers of soil that have moved towards the sea over time. Keep an eye out for the steep cliffs inland and the undulating shapes further down towards the coast. On the beach, you can also find places where the clay is clearly visible, telling the story of how the subsoil affects nature today.
Flowers, berries and butterflies
The pastures are rich in thorny bushes such as hawthorn, wild roses, blackthorn and blackberries. They provide shelter and food for wildlife and set the scene for a grass and herb flora that attracts many insects. In summer, you may be lucky enough to see colourful butterflies, and later in the year, nature's berry pantry takes over.
Parking and practical information
Many choose to reach Lushage via the beautiful but demanding coastal paths from Sletterhage and back. A more accessible route starts from the car park at the end of Klæbjergvej near Esby. Choose footwear with good grip - the ground can be uneven and demanding. Keep a good distance from grazing animals and walk around them if they are standing on the path. Bring water and a small snack if you are planning a longer trip.
