The story of the red barracks at Viborg

The Hald Ege Collection is a local history museum in the heart of Hald Ege near Viborg, where you can delve into the fascinating story of the military hospital camp from World War I and the iconic ‘red barracks’. The museum is located in one of the original barracks and houses a unique collection of objects, pictures and stories that provide a vivid insight into the development of the area over more than 100 years.

From military hospital camp to local community

The story begins in 1917, when the barracks were built as a military hospital camp for German prisoners of war during World War I. After the war, the site became known as the Red Cross Folkekuranstalt and later home to various institutions and schools. The Hald Ege Collection conveys both the major historical events and the small personal stories that together paint a picture of a vibrant local community.

Exhibitions and experiences

In the museum's permanent exhibition, you can see original furnishings, documents, photographs and personal items from both wartime and peacetime. Changing special exhibitions offer new perspectives on Hald Ege's history and cultural heritage, and lectures, city walks and guided tours are regularly organised, where local guides share their knowledge.

An authentic atmosphere

A visit to the Hald Ege Collection is like stepping back in time. You can feel the wings of history in the well-preserved barracks, hear about life in the military hospital camp and gain insight into the developments that have shaped Hald Ege into the local community you see today.
