Discover the University Park on a guided tour
The University Park at Aarhus University is one of Aarhus’ most distinctive areas. The yellow brick buildings are set in a rolling park landscape featuring large oak trees and green lawns. On a guided tour, you’ll gain an insight into the architecture, the natural surroundings and the many stories hidden within the area.
The tour is organised by the Science Museums and takes you around the university buildings and the park’s key locations. Along the way, the guide will tell you about the development of the university and the people who helped shape the area.
Stories about the university’s beginnings
On the tour, you will hear, among other things, about the founding of Aarhus University in 1928 and about the architect C.F. Møller, who designed the distinctive yellow buildings.
You will also hear stories about the university’s development over time – from the first buildings to the establishment of what later became the university town. Along the way, you will learn about student life, historical events and notable figures who have been associated with the place.
From rubbish tip to cultural canon
The area where the University Park stands today has served many purposes over the years. In the late 19th century, the area was a rubbish tip; later, allotments were established there, and in the 1930s, sheep grazed in the park.
Today, the park is renowned for its architecture and landscape. The yellow university buildings and the surrounding park were included in the Ministry of Culture’s cultural canon in 2006 as one of Denmark’s most important architectural works.
During the tour, you will also pass places with fascinating stories – including the hall of residence where the future Queen Margrethe lived during her studies, and areas where dramatic events took place during the Second World War.
