A church with eight centuries of history

Fjellerup Church was built in the Romanesque style, with metre-thick walls and round arches. The chancel and the eastern part of the nave probably date from the 12th century and are partly constructed of granite blocks.

Traces of the church’s former entrances for women and men can be seen in the plinth. Sturdy oak rafters above the oldest part of the church may date back to the time of its construction.

Extensions over the years

In the 16th century, the nave was extended to approximately twice its original size. The porch and tower were added in the 18th century and are built of monk bricks and rough granite.

Historical furnishings from Østergaard

Until 1889, Fjellerup Church was associated with the Østergaard manor house. The manor’s owners donated, amongst other things, the pulpit, candlesticks and wrought-iron lattice doors to the church.

The pulpit dates from 1592 and is decorated with coats of arms and Christian motifs. The gilded wrought-iron lattice doors from 1708 bear the coats of arms and initials of former owners of Østergaard.

The Romanesque baptismal font may date from the church’s earliest days. The altarpiece from 1959 depicts Jesus and two disciples on the road to Emmaus.

The church also houses a model of a Greenlandic cargo ship and an epitaph to Anna Margreta Mollerup of Østergaard, who died in 1763.
