The Coal Bridge in Aarhus
Take a trip to Kulbroen (the coal bridge ) in Aarhus and experience the city's historic South Harbour from a whole new angle! Climb up to a height of eight metres on the old bridge and enjoy the amazing view of the area. From a previously run-down industrial neighbourhood, the South Harbour has transformed into a burgeoning new district, and Kulbroen gives you the opportunity to see this transformation with your own eyes.

From coal to new urban life
Kulbroen was built in 1950 to transport coal from ships in the harbour to Aarhus Gasworks. Today, the old industrial structure has a new function, linking Frederiks Plads with the South Harbour as an elevated pedestrian walkway.
Here, you can walk between the city centre and the South Harbour district and experience an area where traces of the harbour’s industrial past meet new cultural spaces, creative businesses and modern architecture. Kulbroen opened to pedestrians in summer 2026.
From 2017 until summer 2026, the Kulbro View viewing platform stood on the old coal bridge. The platform was built using 17 different FSC-certified tropical timber species.
Inspired by New York and Paris
The vision for Kulbroen and the development of the South Harbour has drawn inspiration from New York’s High Line Park and Paris’ Promenade Plantée, where former transport infrastructure has been given new uses in the city.
Kulbroen has created a new connection between the South Harbour and Frederiks Plads, making it easier to continue towards central Aarhus.
