Clausholm Castle

Clausholm Castle and Park near Hadsten is one of Denmark's best-preserved Baroque buildings from the 17th century – surrounded by a historic park, dramatic stories and royal love. The castle was built in the 1690s by Chancellor Conrad Reventlow, and from 1718-1730 it was owned by King Frederik IV who has left his mark on buildings and the park.

Baroque architecture and cultural history

A Baroque experience in a class of its own

Clausholm Castle was built at the end of the 17th century and is today one of the country's finest examples of Baroque architecture. The castle is known for its symmetrical layout, its 14 painted stucco ceilings and elegant interiors, which tell stories of aristocratic life and aesthetics from a bygone era.

Royal love and drama

One of the most striking stories is linked to King Frederik IV and Anna Sophie Reventlow. The king abducted Anna Sophie from Clausholm, and she later became Queen of Denmark. Their dramatic love story is inextricably linked to the castle – and is part of the atmosphere that guests can feel during a tour.

Castle chapel and unique details

The castle chapel is a particular highlight – it houses one of Denmark's oldest preserved organs. Several of the rooms in the main building were decorated by leading artists and architects of the time and offer a unique insight into the style and way of life of the 18th century.
