Shirin Neshat takes her artistic point of departure in her islamic cultural heritage, however, the topics are universal and eternally relevant. The video art-work has been constructed around the magic-realistic novel with the same title as the exhibition, Women Without Men, which was written by the Iranian writer Shahrnush Parsipur.
Shirin Neshats video art-work portrays the individual lives of five Iranian women in 1953, which was a fateful year in recent Iranian history, as a coup d’etat brought back the shah as the country’s powerful leader. Each of the five films was named after one of these women: Mahdokht, Zarin, Munis, Faezah og Farokh Legha.
