Free city bikes

If you want to see the Aarhus city centre the best way to get around is by foot. However, if you wish to see more of the city and decide the route and pace for yourself – and get some exercise while doing so – then the free city bikes are just the thing for you.

Free city bike in AarhusA great tip for you if you would like to see Aarhus and get some exercise while you’re doing it is to make use of the free city bikes. There are a total of 450 bikes dotted around the city in specially allocated bicycle stands, and you can ride your bike anywhere inside the so-called city-bike zone.

To the north, the boundary is at the Bellevuehallen sports centre in Risskov, and to the south, it is at the Marselisborg woods by Helnan Marselis Hotel. To the west, the boundary follows the Ringgaden inner ring road.

If you want to borrow a bike from one of the stands, you simply put a 20-kroner coin in the coin slot, press the “key” into the other slot to unlock and then release the bike from the stand. When you return the bike to one of the stands and press the “key” back into the slot, you get your coin back. The bikes are on the streets from May to November.

Bonus info: the Danish city bike is no less than world-famous, and this year it won the award for best low-carbon transport and technology at the Virgin Holiday's Responsible Tourism Awards, awarded at the World Travel Market in London.
