If you want to see a lot in a short time and get some exercise while doing so, the free city bikes are an excellent solution. Aarhus is a great city for bike rides, and the city bikes are an easy and free way to get around.
The bikes are dotted around the city in specially allocated bicycle stands, and you simply insert a 20-kroner coin in the coin slot when you take the bike, and get it back again when you return the bike in one of the bike stands. They are on the streets from May to November.
Bonus info: the Danish city bike, originating from Copenhagen, has this year won the award for
best low-carbon transport & technology at the Virgin Holiday's Responsible Tourism Awards.
Our tips for scenic places to go bike-riding inside the so-called city-bike zone include, for example, the area south of the city centre: the
Havreballe Skov woods by the
Marselisborg Palace; the
Marselisborg Memorial Park; the
Tivoli Friheden amusement park; and not least the old cycle path just north of the city centre from the
Aarhus Lystbådehavn yachting marina to the
Den Permanente beach. Here you have the woods to one side and the sea to the other – things can’t get much prettier!
