The choir fell into the sea during a storm
The Church of Saint Oluf was originally outside the town centre and the fortifications. It is a very old church, its consecration possibly dating back to the 11th century. The cemetery originally followed the old beach line, but as the coast was eroded by the sea, more and more of the cemetery disappeared. During a storm in Easter 1548 the sea reached as far as the church´s choir, and it fell into the sea.

The outline of the church which is seen in the lawn is not accurate. The church ruin is much bigger, stretching from the western boundary of the park along Skt. Olufs Gade and into Kystvejen.
The cemetery originally followed the old beach line, but as the coast was eroded by the sea, more and more of the cemetery disappered. During a storm in Easter 1548 the sea reached as far as the church´s choir, and it fell into the sea.
After this the church was torn down, but the remaining part of the cemetery was in continual use until the early 19th century. This explains the existence of the small green park with the tombstones.
