Helsingør Teater

Helsingør Teater

Denmark’s oldest theatre, which has been kept to its original shape and identity, is called 'Helsingør Teater’. Originating from Elsinore, it is today situated in Århus in the Old Town national open air museum of urban history and culture, where it provides a nostalgic setting for atmospheric summer entertainment and other events. With 237 seats and long-standing traditions, the old auditorium boasts an intense atmosphere of its very own..

For even more intimate and informal experiences there is a wealth of opportunities in the city’s healthy layers of experimental theatres. The smaller stages provide ample space for alternative art, and here innovative playwrights often get the chance to present their works.

Focusing on the future

The fact that the drama school and the course for up-and-coming playwright’s are both housed in the Aarhus Theatre, is also a huge factor in the constant rejuvenation of the theatre culture in Århus. Refreshing talent and new initiatives leave their own unique marks on stage art everywhere in the city thus ensuring that the local theatres are always at the forefront of new trends and directions. And, hidden from view and in ways not fully understood even by themselves, the theatres create a collective creative energy which helps to make Århus a northern European centre of perpetual and ground-breaking theatre.

Whether you fancy a peek into the future, the past, the present, or into your self, then pay a visit to the theatre in Århus. The repertoire is wide; the stages are large or small; the performances superb.
